Plagiarism in Art

I understand that something scientific can be easily ‘patented’ and protected from common use. But in music or other arts,how do you differentiate between plagiarism and ‘inspiration’?

I’ll digg more into this.

In case you are still wondering about this post,two of my favourite musicians Joe Satriani and Coldplay are in a legal case.Sach(J.S) is suing Coldplay for lifting his song “If I Could Fly” from his 2004 album “Is There Love In Space“.

The title track of Coldplay’s latest and fourth studio album “Viva La Vida” closely resembles to his song.

I am in a Catch -22 situation.A case of dual loyalty!

Bands esp like Fuzon have successfully created an individualistic genre by mixing classical and rock music.With a vocalist like (well ex vocalist) Shafqat Amanat Ali, people loving this genre would be pleased listening to their albums.

Though filmi music is the mainstay of the majority in our country,I am amazed at the number of pakistani rock bands that are successfully leaving a mark both on bollywood and music charts. Bands like Junoon and Strings started this trend and successfully led now by the likes of Jal,Raeth and my favourites Fuzon and Roxen(their site is defunct now).

Money – Pink Floyd

This is one of the best rock performances : Money by Pink Floyd @ Dark Side of the Moon.
The USP of the song is a ecletic mix of instruments viz Lead Guitar,Sax,Bass Guitar(tell me if you know any other song played partly in just bass),Keyboards and ofcourse the background vocals by those lovely ladies.

Vh1 is airing new programs called “Guitars of God” every weekend at 1100 hrs(repeat weeknights after 2300 IST).

Do check the program if you like guitars and good music.Featured artistes include Eric Clapton, David Gilmour,John Mayer(all three covered last week),Mar Knopfler,Slash,Santana,Nirvana,Jimmy page,SRV,Hendrix etc.

My day can’t be better.I read about things that interest me viz Entrepreneurship and Music. I have already covered about startups in the prev post.Researchers (from Microsoft & Univ of Washington) have developed a program called “Mysong” for “automatically” creating the accompanying music for a singers recorded voice.I guess its aimed at novices like me who would one day venture into music too;-)
